The views are spectacular with Hurtigruten’s floating art gallery
From the breathtaking Norwegian fjords to the impressive icebergs of Greenland and spectacular snow-covered polar region, a voyage with Hurtigruten is well known for its incredible scenery - and that's inside the ships.
Few realise that on board every Hurtigruten ship there is a wealth of artwork by renowned Norwegian artists.
Whether aquarelles, canvas paintings, lithography’s, sculptures, or woven art, the artwork has one thing in common: Each piece is an interpretation of how the artist views the Norwegian coastline and its way of life.

The large formatted painting of Kjell Nupen can be appreciated on MS Finnmarken with its stunning blue wonderful maritime mood, and the expressionistic paintings of Kaare Espolin Johnson on MS Trollfjord tell tales of the Lofoten fishing industry and the hardships endured by the Norwegians living in the High North.
On MS Fram, the newest member of the fleet, the idea of bringing the culture of the regions visited on board was taken into consideration when choosing the artworks for display. The explorer ship, which travels for the most part in polar waters, is predominantly decorated with works of different contemporary artists from Greenland.
The themes of the paintings are based, among others, on the history of the polar region and the history of the old Fram.
Hurtigruten endeavours to take its guests closer to the culture of the regions travelled through its on board artwork, while at the same time happy to promote local artists.
Those living along Norway’s coast also reap the benefits, as they are welcomed onto the ships as they stop at small ports during their voyage, enabling guests to view the art on board.
For many, this makes a welcome change and affords the opportunity to visit a ‘floating’ art exhibition – something they would no normally be able to do because of the great distances involved in travelling.
