Star Cruises orders $1billion cruise ship from Meyer Werft

Star Cruises has ordered a 3,364 passenger cruise ship from German builders Meyer Werft costing an $960m (£600m).

The 1,682 cabin cruise ship is due for delivery in October 2016 and will initially operate in North Asia targeted at China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Meyer Werft have done business with Star Cruises before, having built SuperStar Leo (now Norwegian Spirit) and SuperStar Virgo in 1998 and 1999.

The new ship “will enable the group to take advantage of growing demand for cruise business in the Asia Pacific market and the port infrastructure developments in Hong Kong and Asia which enable large cruise ships to dock”, Star’s owners Genting HK said in a statement.

About 1.5 million Asians cruise each year, representing around 5 per cent of the global cruise market. But it is being ptredicted tyhat this fiugure could soar to 30 pr cent by the end og the decade.
