Saga Cruises expands fleet with second new build ship set to arrive in 2020

It took Saga Cruises a long time to decide on building a new ship. Now, it seems, they have acquired a taste for it.

Hot on the heels of Spirit of Discovery, arriving in July 2019, Saga Cruises is extending its fleet of new build ships with Spirit of Adventure, which is expected to be delivered the following summer.

Spirit of Adventure will be joining the Saga fleet in summer 2020

Both ships will be built by the Meyer Werft in Germany, a world leader in cruise ship construction with a bulging order book.

The 58,250-ton Spirit of Adventure, as sister ship to Spirit of Discovery, has similar external design, carrying fewer than 1,000 passengers, balconies for all cabins and retaining the intimacy and personal touches associated with Saga.

Lance Batchelor, Saga’s chief executive officer, announcing the newbuild today (22 September), said :“Our first new ship will be in service in June 2019 and with pre-sales being very strong, this confidence in demand has supported our decision to expand the new build fleet.”

Robin Shaw, chief executive of Saga Cruises, said: “Our loyal customers have played a key role in the design process for our first new build ship Spirit of Discovery. To date almost 7,000 passengers, who had pre-registered to sail on her have already gone on to book. This is a phenomenal conversion of over 80 per cent.

“Thanks to this strong demand, the desire of Saga members to keep doing the things they love and the forecast growth in the cruise industry, I am absolutely delighted we have now agreed to build a second new ship.”
