Ponant places order for six - yes, SIX - new expedition ships

Polar expedition specialists Ponant has ordered six ships from Vard, the Norwegian subsidiary of the Italian Fincantieri group, with the first slated to arrive in June, 2018.

The orders aim to fulfil the line’s intentions to expand the fleet since it was bought by Artemis, holding company of the Pinault family, in 2015.

The new ships, arriving over the next four years, are to be called Le Lapérouse, Le Champlain, Le Bougainville, Le Dumont d’Urville, Le Bellot and Le Surville.

Equipped with the latest environmental preservation technology, they will join the company’s emblematic sailing yacht Le Ponant and its sister ships, Le Boréal, L’Austral, Le Soléal and Le Lyrial, built by Fincantieri between 2010 and 2015.

In keeping with its philosophy, Ponant has again opted for small-capacity, intimate ships. The six Ice Class ranked newcomers will be 128m in length with 92 staterooms, and a crew of 110.

The French designer Jean-Philippe Nuel has again been given the task of designing the interiors. His remit is to create an ethnic chic universe inspired by driftwood, natural materials and colours, reflecting the spirit of sophisticated yet authentic adventure, in the image of the destinations proposed.

On the six new ships, Blue Expeditions will focus on exploring Oceania, its lagoons and secret islands, while Green Expeditions will take passengers among other places to South America’s best preserved sites, Orinoco River in Amazonia, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, or the Indian Ocean.

The result will be a host of unusual itineraries to get as close as it is possible to local cultures, rare and exceptional flora and fauna, during excursions on a unique fleet of Zodiacs with naturalists on board.
