Not to be missed: Jane McDonald laughs and cries her way around the Caribbean

If you missed Jane McDonald's hilarious exploits cruising around the Caribbean on Friday, then do yourself a favour and watch it on catch up. And don't miss the next three episodes either!

The enthusiasm of the entertainer. who found fame in BBC’s fly-on-the-wall series The Cruise in 1998 and has sung her way into the hearts of many cruise ship audiences, was totally captivating, and couldn’t be bettered as an advertisement for the industry.

Someone opposed to big crowds, full-on entertainment and food coming out of your ears might be forced into a re-think.

Even when Jane decided on a quiet night in her stateroom on MSC’s glittering giant Divina, she couldn’t resist stuffing her face withy pizza - in fact two of them. Not forgetting her full English breakfast in the port of Nassau, and a copious amount of pina coladas as she squeezed every bit of enjoyment out of her cruise to the Bahamas, St Martin and Puerto Rico.

The singer admitted she had been to everywhere she visited hundreds of times before, but it had always been as “crew”, so she actually got to see next to nothing.

Not this time, though, as she went on a coffee-tasting excursion, diving with sharks -  “one of the most amazing experiences of my life” - and suffered the agonies of underwater spinning, which for the uninitiated is riding a stationary bike in a swimming pool.

Amidst all the laughter were also some tears as she visited the oldest church in the Dutch quarter of Sint Maarten where she was overcome by the spiritual emotion of it all.

Jane’s Caribbean jaunt was the first of four on Channel 5, the next three being a mini-cruise to the Inner Hebrides on the Majestic Line’s Glen Tarsan, a river cruise on the Danube on Uniworld’s SS Maria Theresa, and an Alaskan cruise on Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam.

  • Cruising with Jane McDonald airs at 9pm on Channel 5 on Friday 17 and 24 February and 3 March
