Seaside spectacular: MSC Cruises expansion continues with order for two “futuristic” £570m ships

MSC Cruises signed a £1.7bn contract with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for two new 154,000-ton cruise ships and a possible third - the largest ever built by Fincantieri, featuring a revolutionary architectural style in a project codenamed "Seaside".

“Today, MSC Cruises adds the last piece to its new industrial plan that will allow us to double the capacity of our fleet by 2022. With the arrival of the new ships we will reach a capacity of about 80,000 passengers a day, ” said MSC Cruises chief executive Gianni Onorato after signing the deal in May 2014.

How MSC’s new futuristic Seaside ships will look

The first of the new ships, to be called MSC Seaside, is expected to be delivered in November 2017, with the second arriving six months later.

The deal follows MSC Cruises’ letter of intent with STX France, signed in March 2014, for another two ships, with options for two more. The total value of MSC Cruises’ new orders with Fincantieri and STX France total almost £4bn.

“From the moment we started talking with Fincantieri, we had in mind to design and build two completely new ships, revolutionary in their structure, unlike anything that exists on the market today” said Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises.

“Seaside is a futuristic prototype because of its structure, shape and versatility. We are getting ready for the new and compelling challenge that the construction of these ships represents. It will be a real revolution in the world’s cruise market, an excellent product for its unique and innovative architectural features and cutting-edge technology.”

The first of the “Seaside” ships is expected to arrive in November 2017

Measuring 323m long, 41m wide and 70m high, the new ships, costing £570m each,  will accommodate up to 5,300 passengers plus 1,413 crew members.

The “Seaside prototype” features

  • 2,070 guest cabins, 759 for crew members
  • Sea-level promenade that circumnavigates the ship with outdoor spaces, shops and restaurants
  • Spacious theatre
  • Terraced balcony
  • Panoramic lifts with sea views
  • 43,500 square metres of public areas
  • Innovative design and versatility
  • Ability to dock in any port around the world
  • 25% reduction in fuel consumption
  • Three walkways with glass balustrades and a glass floor will give guests the feeling that they are walking on water. The walkway on the top deck spans 30m with views from the top of the ship; the other two are located on deck eight, are 40m in length and are part of the 360 degree open air promenade.

This awesome public space will encircle the entire ship with a range of bars and restaurants for guests to enjoy al fresco dining or a walk in the sea air. Panoramic lifts will transport guests while providing stunning ocean views.

And for thrill-seekers who want to experience the sensation of flying at sea, MSC Seaside will feature the longest zip line on any current cruise ship. Taking off from the funnel at the top of the ship, guests will whizz 130m across the length of the ship, landing at the aft.

There will also be four interactive slides and attractions for all ages, including:

  • Slideboarding - a unique waterslide and interactive video game
  • Duelling High-Speed Aquatubes - sitting in single or double inner tubes, guests race against each other through metres of twists, turns and drops on slides that partially extend over the side of the ship and give riders a view of the sea below
  • AquaPlay™ & AquaSpray™ for younger guests, a portion of the aqua park will be designed specifically for tots, featuring an active and colourful water play structure
  • Adventure Trail - a rope course that allows guests to traverse between soaring towers, rope bridges, climbs, crawl-throughs and slides as they enjoy an amazing bird’s eye view of the sea
