Morris dancers make it a merry start to May at Portsmouth International Port

May is the busiest month of the year for cruise ship visits at Portsmouth International Port, and a troupe of Morris Dancers ensured it it got off to the merriest start as well.

On May Day, passengers checking in for cruises on Voyager and Ocean Nova were given an extra special send off as 30 Morris Dancers from Wickham performed inside the spacious terminal building as people arrived for the start of their holiday.

The traditional dancers, the Wickham Morris Side and the New Forest Medlars, set the scene for a colourful departure from the Waterfront City. The Hampshire Morris Dancers even accompanied passengers leaving on Voyager down to the quayside, the perfect send off for Voyages of Discovery’s British Isles Heritage Cruise.

The ship lookled in excellent shape after her routine dry dock in Bremerhaven, and had just returned to Portsmouth for the start of the summer season.

Ocean Nova is operated by Quark Expeditions, built to withstand tough polar conditions. With just 38 cabins it is typical of the smaller expedition ships that take passengers from Portsmouth to places that bigger cruise liners just can’t go.

During May there will be 13 cruise ship calls and visits at Portsmouth International Port, all timed to fit in with the busy ferry and cargo ship schedule at Britain’s best connected Port. Cruise passengers have dedicated facilities at the Port, with many taking the opportunity to visit the historical sights and shopping delights in Portsmouth.

As holidaymakers explore the city, and come and go to exciting destinations, a team of workers will be putting the finishing touches to the latest tourist destination in Portsmouth. The Ben Ainslie Racing HQ building is due for completion by the end of May/early June, with its visitor centre set to be a must see attraction.

The BAR team will be preparing for the America’s Cup World Series event in Portsmouth this summer, which is due to attract tens of thousands of people to the City.
