Hurtigruten to visit some of the world’s remotest areas in 2011/12

Hurtigruten's dedicated programme of ‘Explorer’ voyages for 2011/12 in Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica features new itineraries, experiences and the chance to visit some of the most remote places in the world.

Get remote in SPITSBERGEN / NORWAY

New ‘Climate Voyage’ visiting remote island of Jan Mayen,from £1866pp
For 2011, the eight-day climate voyage will take a new itinerary and travel from Iceland to Spitsbergen, making an inaugural visit to Jan Mayen, one of the most isolated islands on the planet. Its closest land mass is Iceland some 600km to the southwest.
Conditions allowing, a rare landing will be made here. Themed on climate change, shore landings, lectures and discussions help passengers gain a better understanding of this topical issue.
Departs July 21, 2011, and price includes seven nights full board on the ship, flights from Longyearbyen to Oslo and based on two sharing.

‘Polar Bears, Islands and Fjords’ including the remote islands communities in Alstahaug and Vega, from £2876pp
A new 13-day itinerary, entirely by ship takes in Spitsbergen’s western coast before sailing south to the remote region of Bear Island and on towards the North Cape before heading south down the coast of Norway. Discover hidden pearls of Norway’s coast including several new ones that are not visited on the traditional coastal voyage route.
Alstahaug is a community of some 7,000 spread across no fewer than 917 islands and the UNESCO protected islands of Vega encompass a staggering 6,000 islands, inlets and skerries with remote fishing villages.

‘Classic Norway and Spitsbergen’ crossing the 80th parallel, from £2814pp
A new 11-day itinerary combining the coast of Norway and the north west of Spitsbergen with internal flights between. This trip takes in northern Spitsbergen including Ny Ålesund, the world’s most northerly permanent occupied settlement and crosses the 80th parallel to visit Moffen Island.
Four dates are available on 25 July, 1, 8, 15 August and price includes ten nights full board on the ship, flights between Kirkenes and Longyearbyen and from Longyearbyen to Oslo. Based on two sharing.

Get remote in GREENLAND

Remote settlements on ‘Glaciers and Icebergs’ voyage, from £3671pp
This 9-day expedition along Greenland’s west coast visits places only accessible by ship including Itilleq, a small and isolated community with just 130 inhabitants who exist on hunting and fishing. With more than 80 per cent of the country covered in ice,  this is a polar destination like no other. There will hopefully be the chance to meet local Inuits and perhaps even watch the crew of MS Fram play football against the locals in Itilleq.
