Follow in the footsteps of ITV’s Alexander Armstrong with Hurtigruten’s authentic Arctic adventure

Television presenter Alexander Armstrong’s three-part series "Land of the midnight sun" kicked off on ITV last week as he embarked on an epic 8,000 mile journey across the Arctic Circle, some of it already familiar to many of Hurtigruten's guests.

During his trip he met the locals, sampled the local cuisine and experienced one of the most authentic methods of local travel – a Hurtigruten ship.

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of the wonders of an Arctic cruise

Alexander, star of the quiz show Pointless,  travelled in winter and in the first programme took a dip in the icy Arctic sea. But if that is a bit too extreme for your tastes, Hurtigruten offer many other ways to experience the Arctic including husky sledging, king crab fishing, snowmobiling or staying in a Snow hotel - not forgetting the chance to gaze in awe at the Northern Lights.

The Hurtigruten voyage is ideal for foodies as the on-board menus not only reflect the seasons, but also the local specialities and cuisine of the regions past which the ship is sailing. Products and delicacies are sourced from local small-scale producers and suppliers and seasonal raw foods are brought fresh onto the ship each day.

A five-day Arctic Highlghts package including a three-night voyage from Tromso to Kirkenes and back to Tromso, plus a night in Kirkenes and direct flights currently costs from £749 per person (from London Gatwick on 21 February 2016) with other dates and airports also offered. The price includes a £200 per person discount off the normal price and a free wine or beer package.

For the ultimate Arctic experience, the 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen along the coast to Kirkenes and back to Bergen stops off at 34 ports along the way. Prices start from £995 per person on a wide selection of dates in January 2016 (in an inside cabin on full board basis). Hurtigruten are also so confident you will see the Northern Lights, that this voyage qualifies for their Northern Lights Promise. Flight and transfers are available from an additional £330 per person.
