Cunard’s legendary Verandah Grill to make a comeback on the Queen Mary 2

The legendary Queen Mary Verandah Grill, frequented by the rich and famous including Fred Astaire, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich and Winston Churchill to name just a few, is making a comeback, this time on the Queen Mary 2.

It will be exactly 80 years since the first Cunard Verandah Grill went to sea on Queen Mary in May 1936 that the latest incarnation of The Verandah concept will set sail on board Queen Mary 2 in June 2016.

The space, currently Todd English, will be re-introduced as The Verandah when the QM2 undergoes a significant refit in May and June when the Cunard flagship is remastered.

Already popular on Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, the debut of this new signature restaurant onboard Queen Mary 2 means that all three Cunard ships will feature this distinct fine dining experience, premium French menu and delicious seasonal fare.

Set within light and elegant dining rooms, attention to every detail is aimed at creating an unforgettable dining experience, available at a surcharge for lunch and dinner. A bar will be available for pre- and post-meal drinks.

Says Angus Struthers, Cunard Director: “The original Verandah Grills on Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were nothing short of legendary in their day. They were the most exclusive dining rooms at sea, on a par with esteemed private clubs in London, New York and Paris. Today’s Verandah concept on our fleet aims to recreate that special ambience and is open to all passengers who want to enjoy a truly special lunch or dinner in an environment that heralds the golden age of ocean travel.”

Exclusively reserved for First Class passengers, the original Verandah Grills became the most sought after places to be seen and spend time in on the Atlantic. With a dance floor and resident orchestra, First Class passengers could drink, dine and dance into the early hours for a charge of 10 shillings per person. The Verandah Grills offered a truly exclusive experience and extra privacy for the rich and famous including frequent Hollywood stars and royal visitors.
