Regent Seven Seas’ Captain Serena Melani sails into the history books

imageCaptain Serena Melani will become the first woman in cruise industry history to skipper a new cruise ship at launch when she takes the helm of Regent Seven Seas’ newest ship, Seven Seas Splendor.
Melani, 45, began her nautical career at age 16 as a cadet while attending school working on cargo ships. She joined Regent in 2010 as a Bridge Officer and became the company’s first female Master Captain in 2016, since when she has led Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Navigator.
“There is a growing number of very talented female captains emerging in our industry,” she said, “and we’re proud to be pioneers for those women who aspire to lead the Bridge.”

Holland America Line celebrates “exciting milestone” of next Pinnacle Class ship

Holland America Line’s next Pinnacle Class ship has reached a construction milestone with the cutting of the main section at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy. The newbuild is due for delivery in May 2021 when she will join here two Pinnacle Class sisters, Koningsdam and the recently launched Nieuw Statendam.
“The steel cutting is always an exciting milestone in the construction process because from here the ship quickly takes shape and we begin counting the days until the first cruise,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president.

Princess Cruises spreads onboard WiFi

image Princess Cruises’ high-speed onboard WiFi, MedallionNet, will be available on ten of its ships - more than half the line’s fleet - by the end of this year.
MedallionNet is currently available on four ships: Caribbean Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess and Ruby Princess.
“The expansion of MedallionNet to a further six ships means that more guests than ever before can experience land-like connection speeds from anywhere on the ship,” said Tony Roberts, vice president Princess Cruises UK & Europe.

MSC Bellissima MSC Cruises is to become the official global cruise partner of France’s leading football team, Paris Saint-Germain.

AmaWaterways appoints first UK Wine Host 

imageAmaWaterways is featuring a UK wine host for the first time this year on one of its wine-themed river cruises.
The line offers more than 60 wine-themed cruises each year across Europe, and with increasing interest from British guests, its team of North American connoisseurs will be joined by the UK’s William Betts, who used to blend fuels for Formula 1 racing cars.
He will host the seven-night Medieval Treasures wine cruise from Basel to Nuremberg on 15 August, and said:  “I can’t think of a better way to enjoy drifting between vineyards, quickly enough to understand the whole region and slowly enough to understand its individual terroirs.”
