A date with Destiny - Carnival's first "Floating Resort"

Carnival's first "Floating Resort", the Carnival Destiny, began cruising from Miami on November 24, 1996.

The first cruise ship to top 100,000 tons, Destiny caters for up to 3,400 guests and offers the highest space ratio of any Carnival ship and most other contemporary passenger vessels.

The vessel underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2005 that included the addition of a new teen club - part of the line’s popular “Club O2” program - along with a renovated Lido restaurant and children’s pool, redesigned casino, and updated suites.

Also featured are 18 lounges and bars, four restaurants, four swimming pools, Carnival’s signature 214ft Twister Waterslide, an on-board duty-free shopping mall, a 15,000sq-ft spa and health club, a Camp Carnival children’s program with spacious facilities and fun-filled activities. A comprehensive golf program offering opportunities to play top Caribbean courses is also available.

Of its 1,321 staterooms, 60 percent offer either an ocean view or private balcony Ð perfect for scenic Caribbean cruising. All accommodations feature the Carnival Comfort Bed sleep system with plush mattresses, luxurious duvets and high quality linens and pillows.

The ship (pictured) combines contemporary decor with classical elements. Boasting 12 passenger decks, the Destiny features some unique facilities.

• Two spectacular atriums dominate each end, one spanning nine decks, the other three.
• The Palladium, the main show lounge, is on three levels and offers virtually unobstructed views from every seat in the house
• The Universe and Galaxy dining rooms are split level, featuring a balcony
• More informal dining is available at the Sun and Sea Restaurant, which offers themed dining alternatives - an Italian trattoria, a Chinese restaurant, a pizzeria, grill and buffet. Among other entertainment venues is the largest casino afloat, a disco with two-level dance floor, and bars and lounges to suit every mood.

There are four swimming pools, including one for children. The main pool area is terraced and equipped with a stage for outdoor activities and functions, while another features the longest slide afloat - more than 200ft. Two pools have swim-up bars, one of which is equipped with a retractable glass dome for special events in case the weather turns bad, which is very rarely of course. There are also seven whirlpools on board.

At 15,000 square feet, the Nautica Spa gymnasium health and fitness centre will be the largest afloat, set on two levels and offering a 1,300 square foot beauty salon. Continuing Carnivals’ commitment to family entertainment, the Destiny will also feature the largest children’s playroom facilities afloat.

The three recreation decks are sandwiched between the accommodation decks, ensuring that all guests have easy access to all the public spaces.

Inside staterooms measure approximately 185sq ft which is considerably larger than average in the cruise industry.
Every stateroom features a sitting area, while about 13 per cent have connecting doors and there are 16 family staterooms located near the children’s facilities.
The Destiny also features suites (340sq ft) and penthouse suites (430sq ft). There are specially adapted staterooms for physically challenged guests.

The Destiny cruises alternate seven night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami departing Sundays.
